Novak crowns stellar season in London
LONDON: Novak Djokovic ended a magnificent season by beating Roger Federer 6-3 6-4 to win the ATP World Tour Finals last night.
The Serbian world No 1 had lost to Federer in the group phase, but dominated the final as the Swiss had some early chances but wasted a couple of break points.
Djokovic proved more ruthless, breaking in the third and ninth games to take the opening set.
Federer, bidding for a record-extending seventh title at the year-ender, was staring at the abyss when he trailed 3-4 0-40 in the second set, but escaped with five consecutive points.
But Djokovic was unrelenting and wore the 34-year-old down when the Swiss served to stay in the match at 4-5.
“It is never fun on the not winning side, it is better than not playing at all like last year,” Federer said.
“This week was great, there were some crazy points tonight, but like plenty of times this year, Novak deserved it. Well done on a crazy good year.”
In reply, the champion hoisted the trophy to the roof as the blue-and-white tickertape fluttered down around him. “I am enjoying every moment on the court, I cherish every moment after dreaming of it as a kid. Thank you everyone for making this year so special,” said Djokovic.
“I am looking forward to two weeks of holiday with my wife and son and away from tennis. Congratulations to Roger, it was another epic match today.” – Reuters
