The Mercury

‘What’s the point of

- Billy Suter

A WARD-winning Durban actress and vocal coach Charon Williams-Ros, who is currently wowing Johannesburg theatre fans in Durban’s KickstArt theatre company tour of the musical Sweeney Todd, chats about her TV likes and dislikes.

What current TV show do you try to not miss?

I love George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. I am fascinated by architecture and the transformation of spaces.

The current TV shows you find the most overrated?

Idols. What’s the point? And I don’t understand the obsession with Keeping Up With The Kardashians. I’m too busy living my life to be watching paint dry on someone else’s walls.

TV shows you have loved over the years ?

Downton Abbey because of the magnificent Maggie Smith (and the costumes). I’m a sucker for period pieces. I also enjoyed Penny Dreadful … because of the lovely Josh Hartnett. Also Sherlock – everything about it is brilliant. I was also a big fan of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Graham Norton TV shows How to Solve a Problem like Maria, Any Dream Will Do and I’d Do Anything, because they were about musical theatre.

TV shows you have not enjoyed over the years?

Most sitcoms with canned laughter. Also Carte Blanche. It’s a necessary evil – they do important work, but it’s not something I enjoy watching. The theme tune is enough to depress me.
