Call for ANC to rerun nomination meetings
THE SACP and the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) have called for a rerun of most of the ANC’s nomination meetings.
They say the ANC has sidelined its partners in the nomination process.
The SACP had recently announced its withdrawal from nomination committees, which were created to run the nomination meetings, after the SACP alleged that the ANC was running the committees unilaterally.
SACP provincial secretary Themba Mthembu and his Sanco counterpart, Richard Mkhungo, told media at a press briefing in Durban that the ANC had used factionalism in nominating candidates.
“There are things that have happened which are against the spirit of the guidelines,” said Mkhungo.
He said to date there were 23 objections against the meeting set up to nominate candidates.
Mthembu said the SACP had received reports of “gatekeeping” from various branches across the province.
“It appears that it is payback time for those who had supported a particular faction. Certain candidates who are loyal to a particular faction that emerged victorious in the conferences must be the one to emerge (victorious),” said Mthembu.
ANC spokesman Mdumiseni Ntuli said the SACP and Sasco utterances could tarnish the ANC. “The ANC has called on the SACP to talk about its concerns. Now they are going to the media to make allegations, which is disingenuous,” he said.
