DURBAN’S KickstArt theatre company production of Little Shop of Horrors, revived for a Johannesburg and Cape Town tour last year, stands to win two Fleur du Cap theatre awards.
Nominations for the 51st annual Fleur du Cap theatre awards were announced yesterday. They acknowledge outstanding work on stages throughout the Western Cape.
Little Shop of Horrors, originally staged in Durban by Steven Stead and Greg King, has received a nomination for Candice van Litsenborgh as best actress, for her lead role as naive shop assistant Audrey.
Her competition is Bethany Dickson for Singin’ in the Rain, as Kathy Selden; Claire Taylor for Cabaret, as Sally Bowles; Lynelle Kenned for West Side Story, as Maria; and Lynelle Kenned for Orpheus in Africa, as Mattie Allen.
Zak Hendrikz, who was hilarious as the unhinged dentist, Orin, in Little Shop of Horrors, has been nominated for best supporting actor for the role. His competition is Dean Balie for Orpheus in Africa, as various characters; De Klerk Oelofse for Liewe Heksie, as various characters; Sne Dladla for Orpheus in Africa, as various characters; and Stephen Jubber for West Side Story, as gang head Riff.

A Lifetime Achievement award will be announced at the awards ceremony, at 6pm on Sunday, March 20, at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town.
The awards are presented in 20 different categories and 86 productions from 2015 were eligible.
Each award carries a cash prize of R15 000 and a silver medallion.
