West Ham strike late to reach FA Cup last 16

-

LONDON: Angelo Ogbonna headed the winner in stoppage time of extra time as West Ham United secured a 2-1 win over a young Liverpool team to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup last night.

Ogbonna rose to meet a free kick from Dimitri Payet and planted his header back across keeper Simon Mignolet and into the far corner of the net to seal their first FA Cup win over Liverpool in their fourthround replay.

The hosts took the lead when Michail Antonio guided a superb volley into the top corner moments before halftime, after Liverpool had controlled the early stages without being able to find a breakthrough.

The lead was swiftly wiped out, however, as Philippe Coutinho side-footed a cheeky free kick below the jumping West Ham wall three minutes into the second half.

Liverpool shaded extratime and Benteke had two good chances to end the contest. But he struck a good shooting opportunity wide, then lost out to Darren Randolph when put through one on one. For £32 million he was expected to decide matches like this one.

It was West Ham who ended this match in style, with Payet’s free-kick perfectly placed on Ogbonna’s head.

The ball nestled in the far corner, Mignolet beaten.

Players of both sides were applauded from the pitch by all. They had fought each other close to standstill. – Reuters-Daily Mail
