SUPERSPORT United captain Dean Furman has nothing on his mind except winning trophies in the new campaign.

He is hoping to lead a star-studded SuperSport team to glory this coming season. Coach Stuart Baxter has assembled a solid team that is expected to fight for every trophy on offer.

In all positions Baxter has close to three quality players. Furman reckons competition for places in the team will lead to them doing well.

“We have added more quality to the squad. There’s competition for places. We are very excited for the season ahead and we hope we can have a strong campaign and be at the top end of the table.

“Our goal is to be right up there, to be challenging for trophies at every front this season. “For now we are focusing on the pre-season to get ourselves physically and technically right. Hopefully it can be a great one for us.”

In central midfield, where Furman operates, there are about six players in line so competition will be fierce.

With the likes of Yeye Letsholonyane, Alexander Cole, Michael Morton, Morne Nel,

KEY MAN: JEREMY BROCKIE

FOR any team to be competitive in the league, they need a marksman, a goal poacher of note. SuperSport have one in Jeremy Brockie. The man from New Zealand has proved to be a vital cog in Matsatsantsa’s attack. Since his arrival at the Tshwane outfit, Brockie has always delivered the goals. He is expected to play a key role for Baxter’s side this season. Brockie has great support from midfield, where SuperSport are blessed with men of great talent.

Thabo Nyamane, Dove Wome, Thuso Phala and Jeremy Brockie, SuperSport boast a team that can challenge for any trophy.

“It’s going to be a very interesting season. It’s going to be a tight season with a lot of twists and turns. We are very focused and we want to be at the top.

“That’s what is on our minds at this time. We know there are top teams that have made top signings but likewise we have done the same. It’s going to be one hell of a season but hopefully we can be in the title race,” said the Bafana Bafana midfielder.

“There’s competition and depth in our squad. For me it’s important to have a good campaign. Last season was a pit The likes of Yeye Letsholonyane and Alexander Cole have the ability to find Brockie with passes from the middle and once he latches onto them, he can cause trouble.

Brockie is lethal in the air and can also score with either foot. He is the type of striker that keeps defenders busy throughout a match. On his day Brockie can score more than one goal.

He is also flexible. He can play as a striker and also from deep. From either, he is deadly.

stop start and we really didn’t take off until the last part of the season.”

Baxter has a pedigree of winning and the Brit has been working on combinations and imposing his style of play in pre-season.

“Pres-eason has gone well,” said Furman. “We have had time to work on a few things at the training ground and also to come together. The squad has had quite a few signings and we have had them gel with the rest of the team.

“Everyone is working very hard to take the coach’s instructions. Things are looking good for the start of the season.”

On paper SuperSport United look set to be one of the challengers for the league title in the new campaign. Matsatsantsa a Pitori have invested in quality in all departments.

SuperSport have won the PSL three times in previous seasons. They may not have a huge following like Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, but they are big in other aspects.

Baxter has assembled team that is full of quality.

In the goalkeeping department, Baxter has added Reyaard Pieterse, who is set to challenge Ronwen Williams for the No 1 jersey. Baxter will certainly have a performer between the sticks throughout the season.

However, if they must get the defence right if they want to be strong contenders.

SuperSport will be difficult to beat.

Baxter is spoilt for choice with two or more quality players in each position. Up front Baxter has men that are proven in the art of scoring. Jeremy Brockie, Bradley Grobler, Kingston Nkhatha, Fagrie Lakay and new signing Thabo Mnyamane will get the goals. a
