English language is universal – learn it!
WHILE the debate rages on regarding languages in South Africa, there is only one way to go – English. Britannia may have ruled the waves a while ago but when it comes to medicine, global commerce and trade, English is the most universal language.
Learning a foreign language is good but if you are not going to use/ speak the language this will be forgotten and your time is wasted.
South Africa should make all schools English medium with a second language compulsory. Here the second language may suit regional preferences. Tertiary education in the next 10 years should be English only or offered with English translation.
In greater Durban look at the number of African children attending former Indian and Model C schools which all have English instruction. Further, such individuals have far more confidence and skill upon completing matric as opposed to a pupil from a rural area whose main language is Zulu.
Why should pupils be on different footings? Would you prefer your kid not to be fluent in English? MUHAMMAD OMAR
