Usuthu top First Division table after perfect weekend

- Kamlesh Gosai

A PERFECT weekend for AmaZulu turned out even better after the Durban side stood alone at the summit of the First Division yesterday.

Thanks to a first win of the season for Jomo Cosmos, against Mthatha Bucks yesterday, Usuthu hold a threepoint lead after four matches. A second-half goal by Mxolisi Macuphu inflicted a first loss on the Eastern Cape side and prevented them from reclaiming top spot on goal difference.

Bucks stand on seven points, with University of Pretoria, Black Leopards and Thanda Royal Zulu. Thanda and AmaZulu, who beat Tuks 3-0, are the only unbeaten sides, although the Richards Bay outfit have a game in hand.

Thanda drew with Mbombela United thanks to Mhlengi Cele’s second-half equaliser, which cancelled Zambian winger Clifford Mulenga’s opener for the home team.

In other Saturday action the unbeaten starts of Real Kings and Tuks were ended against FC Cape Town and AmaZulu respectively.

KwaZulu-Natal rookies Kings yet again suffered a meltdown after taking the lead in Cape Town via midfielder Mmiseni Ndlovu’s first-half strike.

As in earlier games they failed to hold on to their advantage, and Cape Town replied via Julius Likhontsane and Vuyisile Ntombayithethe to take maximum points.

In a table-topper, AmaZulu won 3-0 through Mabhuti Khenyeza’s long-range bullet and veteran strike partner Siyabonga Nomvethe’s secondhalf double.
