Haunting image in horrific struggle

-

THEY say a picture is worth a thousand words. I remember when I saw the picture of the 5-year-old Syrian boy, Omran Daqneesh, it only said one: hopeless.

His childhood has been one of bombs and bullets, rather than colouring books and toys.

The 250 000-plus besieged citizens of east Aleppo now have no way to escape and little hope of outside aid coming in. Aleppo seems fated to become the next Guernica, multiplied 100 times.

For the last five years, both the Syrian regime and extremist groups have launched numerous attacks on the city, leading to thousands of casualties and forcing hundreds of thousands to flee the besieged city.

That photo of 5-year-old Omran Daqneesh – confused and covered in dust and blood as he sat in an ambulance after being rescued in August from the rubble of a building, is a haunting image in the unforgiving struggle. NASRINE AKOOB North Beach
