Varsity College shine in slippery conditions

- Jos Robson

VARSITY College hosted another successful festive afternoon at their annual Fidelity Security Intervarsity Day last Saturday.

The clubs deserve credit for fulfilling their obligations in wet conditions that weren’t conducive to running rugby.

The annual intervarsity clash saw the hosts come away with a clean sweep against the visitors from the capital, FNB UKZN Impi, with the Impi second-stringers nearly upsetting the parade before losing 20-16 after a late try by Varsity College to seal the game.

The day ended with some fine running rugby, which saw Varsity College come away with a comprehensive 46-0 win over the luckless UKZN Impi outfit, who although beaten eight tries to nil, produced some fine moments in an entertaining Fidelity Security Premier Division game.

Scoring three tries in the first session and leading 21-0 at the break, the hosts finished with a flourish with five more tries and would have gained a lot of confidence before the big game in Durban North against SA Home Loans Durban Collegians on Saturday.

Varsity College’s tries came from hooker Marcel du Plessis, lock Ray September and scrumhalf Blake Mingay, who came off the bench, crossing for two each, with the other two going to wing Willem Rheeder and Anela Sibhoko.

Skipper Josh Fourie kicked three conversions and the two Man of the Match awards went to No 8 William Squires and centre Coneree Poole.

Across the Umgeni, Your Communications College Rovers and SA Home Loans Durban Collegians hosted Newcastle and Richards Bay respectively, with Rovers beating their visitors from Northern KZN 85-0 and Durban Collegians accounting for the men from the Bay 31-0.

Rovers led 28-0 at the break and finished with a resounding second half that saw Biesele Tshamala leading the charge with three tries and Duke Makina and Chris Kemp picking up two each, accounting for seven of the 13 tries scored.

In other games, eThekwini Refractories Amanzimtoti beat South Coast Warriors 36-13 and Bidvest Insurance Crusaders had a great away win in Sydenham, beating Jaguars 48-20.

Varsity College will host Durban Collegians on Saturday, Rovers travel to meet South Coast Warriors, Mancosa Zululand Rhinos entertain Amanzimtoti, UKZN Impi are at home to Richards Bay, and Jaguars host Newcastle, with Crusaders having a bye.
