Pirates set sail for Africa
ORLANDO Pirates have signalled their seriousness about the journey they are about to embark on in Africa.
The Buccaneers will be competing in the Caf Champions League after finishing as the Absa Premiership runners up last season.
As part of their preparations Pirates have decided to conduct their pre-season in Zambia.
Pirates were the first Southern African team in 1995 to lift the then Caf Champions Cup trophy.
In 2006 they reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. The Sea Robbers in 2013 succumbed to Egypt’s Al Ahly in the final.
Pirates assistant coach Rhulani Mokwena said the trip to Zambia is to prepare for the Champions League.
“Going to Zambia is part of our preparations for the Champions League. We are embarking on it for the first time to go outside the country for our pre-season as Pirates. It is indicative of our intentions of what we want to do in the African continent this season,” Mokwena elaborated.
Mokwena was part of the Mamelodi Sundowns team that won the Champions League in 2016 but he is banking on the experience of his chairman, Irvin Khoza.
“Pirates have done it before in 1995. They did it under the same chairman who is still in charge at the club. Our chairman has an extensive knowledge of Africa as a football administrator. His experience in the continent will come in very handy,” said Mokwena.
