Three hurt in KZN cash-in-transit heist

- Thami Magubane

THREE cash van guards were injured yesterday when armed robbers carried out a cash-in-transit heist on the R33 between Greytown and Dundee.

The heist, believed to be the first in KZN for several months, comes after several incidents in Gauteng and other parts of the country.

There have been more than 160 incidents this year, according to the South African Banking Risk Information Centre.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo confirmed the incident, and said the robbers had shot at the cash van and forced it off the road.

“They used explosives to force open the van, and escaped with an undisclosed amount of money.”

He said police had yet to establish how many robbers had been involved in the heist.

Naidoo said the three injured guards had been taken to hospital. “We’re not sure whether they were injured from the shooting or due to the van being forced off the road.”

Police Minister Bheki Cele unveiled plans last month to deal with cash heist gangs, and Naidoo said arrests were being made. He said that last week police successfully foiled an attempted cash heist and arrested 23 people.
