Islam the antithesis of what blogger claims

- KEVIN GOVENDER | Shallcross

THERE has been much debate about the unholy sister blogger who proclaims universities are not for Islamic women.

The anonymous author portrays universities as a breeding ground for immorality. I am of the opinion that her own experiences have led to a terrible narcissistic injury, and in her quest to heal her own wounds, she is dragging the entire Muslim womanhood into this debacle.

Islam is committed to tolerance, equality and democracy. The Qur’an states that Islamic society is contingent on “mutual advice through mutual discussions on equal footing”. Islam condones neither cruelty nor dictatorship or beating, torturing and humiliating of women.

Prophet Muhammad accepted women as equal partners in society, in business and even in war.

Islam codified the rights of women. The Qur’an elevates the rights of women to that of men. When Prophet Muhammad received his first revelation from God and had doubts and fears, it was his first wife, Bibi Khadijah, who believed that his experience was truly divine. She became the world’s first Muslim, and so the world’s first person to embrace Islam was a woman!

Throughout the Qur’an there is example after example of respect for women as leaders and as equals. So in this day and age I cannot believe that we are still entertaining such warped thinking as that of the blogger. This is nothing but the work of a mischief-maker with a skewed view of society.
