Where there’s political will there’s hope
THE government service delivery machinery can be very effective and efficient if there is political will to do so. The timeous delivery of impressive 2010 Fifa World Cup stadiums and accompanying infrastructure proved, once and for all, that no challenge is insurmountable if the government is fully committed to the task at hand.
For the first time since the re-emergence of political killings in KwaZuluNatal there is renewed hope that the government will finally deal with the scourge of political violence.
The inter-ministerial task team formed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to probe political killings in the province made a major breakthrough on Sunday when it arrested Harry Gwala district mayor Mluleki Ndobe.
Ndobe and three other officials were expected to appear in court today over the murder of former ANC Youth League leader and Umzimkhulu councillor Sindiso Magaqa.
The work being done by the task team is commendable and has sent a clear message to political assassins and their handlers that their days are numbered.
Those close to the investigations have informed us that the task team is made up of senior police officers from outside KwaZulu-Natal, and that no resources have been spared to assist them in cracking these serious cases.
Most importantly, our sources tell us that the task team has no holy cows in its quest to arrests the culprits.
If this information is anything to go by, it is clear to us that more arrests are imminent.
