WHAT’S ON BOXING

-

IN an outstanding exhibition of skilful boxing, South Africa’s Azinga Fuzile retained his IBF intercontinental juniorlightweight title for the first time with a unanimous points decision over the experienced Mexican Romulo Koasicha at the Nongoza Jebe Hall in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

One judge scored it 118-109 and the other two judges had it 119-108.

In an exciting opening round the southpaw Fuzile (58.80kg) came out fast to score with two good lefts to the body and an uppercut, but was warned for a low blow by the referee that was debatable. A great left uppercut sent 27-year-old Koasicha down in a dominant opening round for the South African.

Koasicha (58.40kg) never got into the fight against a classy Fuzile who frustrated him throughout with his fast hands and movement around the ring.

Koasicha tried his best and threw several punches at Fuzile with most of them on the gloves. The 22-year-old Fuzile improved his record to 14-0; 8 and Koasicha’s record dropped to 27-8; 17.

SA junior-lightweight champion Phial Mpontshana retained his title for the fourth time, in a rematch with Koos Sibiya, in a unanimous points decision. |
