AN OFF-DUTY Tshwane metro police officer has been praised for stopping a hijacking on his way home.

Around 7.40pm, at the Brits Road and the R80 Mabopane Highway on-ramp, he noticed a vehicle with a female driver.

It stopped at a red traffic light and two men approached. One went to the driver’s side while the other, who had a firearm, went to the passenger’s side. He broke the window and pointed the firearm at the driver.

The constable realised what was going on and shot the suspect with the firearm. The other man ran away, and the suspect was taken to hospital under police guard. He is facing charges of attempted hijacking and possession of an illegal firearm.

“Tshwane metro police are proud of the constable and commend him for his bravery,” spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said.
