Fans buzzing for City-Chiefs game

- | Mike de Bruyn

TOP spot in the PSL standings will be up for grabs for Cape Town City when they entertain log leaders Kaizer Chiefs at Newlands tomorrow (7.30pm kickoff).

The teams shared a win apiece away from home in their two league meetings last season, Amakhosi winning 4-1 in Cape Town with the Citizens winning 1-0 in Johannesburg.

As things stand on the log, unbeaten Chiefs – who played to a 1-1 draw at home to SuperSport United on Saturday – have seven points from three games and lead Wits, Polokwane City and Golden Arrows by one. City are two points off the pace in sixth having earned five points from a win and two draws from their three fixtures, the last away to Sundowns on Tuesday that ended 1-1. As for what lies in store, coach Benni McCarthy wants to make home advantage count.

“We always back ourselves at home, and this game will be no different,” he said.

“This is a chance for us to command the respect from other teams. A win against Chiefs is always a big boost. We come off a good point on the road. We had good opportunities to get all three points but when you look at it now, to go to Pretoria and get a point from the Brazilians is something not many teams will do this season. The boys all know that they are in with a chance to be selected, that’s how I prefer it. It keeps them all motivated and working hard so in the end I choose the players who are best suited to do the job, but also a balance of the ones who work hard at training.

“We didn’t do so well at Newlands against Polokwane This time around we are better prepared, we will be doing a training session on the pitch so it’s a lot better in terms of preparation this time. I’m sure the fans are buzzing for this one. We can’t wait to see a packed Newlands.”
