Four arrested for ‘taxi feud’-linked shootings

FOUR men have been arrested after six people were gunned down within 90 minutes in Emgodini just outside Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.

It is believed that the murders were linked to an ongoing feud between rival taxi associations.

Sources have revealed that the body count could be much higher, with those living in the area estimating that 10 people had been killed in the past two weeks. Some of them were believed to have been working as taxi marshalls. They claim that the dispute was over a taxi route.

One of the slain men, Mzwakhe Mdlalose, had told friends he feared for his life just hours before he was murdered. He was gunned down at his parents’ home.

The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison in KwaZulu-Natal, Mxolisi Kaunda, instructed the police to continue the search for two more suspects.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said six cases of murder had been opened at the Plessislaer police station.
