Putin’s made no plan to pardon prisoners

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has not made a decision on pardoning thousands of prisoners so far as the country prepares to celebrate the 75th anniversar­y of the Soviet Union victory in World War II next year, Kremlin spokespers­on Dmitry Peskov said yesterday.

The chairperso­n of the Presidenti­al Council for Civil Society and Human Rights, Mikhail Fedotov, said: “No, the president has no formulated a position on this matter yet. No decisions have been made so far.”

In 2015, which marked the 70th anniversar­y of WWII Victory, amnesty was granted to about

60 000 prisoners. |
