GREAT START TO FIRST WEEK OF NATIONAL WOMEN’S LEAGUE |
THERE was a glut of goals to mark the start of the Safa National Women’s League at the Nike Football Training Centre in Pimville, Soweto, on Saturday and Sunday.
The first-ever football match in the league between Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and Richmond Ladies was shown live on SABC1, after all the recent uncertainties with the national broadcaster threatening a black-out because of financial problems.
Sundowns won the match 7-0, but at the end of the day, football was the winner with several commentators hailing Safa for keeping good on their promise of getting the league underway.
Twenty-three goals were recorded in just two days of action – with 18 of those coming on Sunday.
Sundowns were the biggest winners, followed by Golden Ladies (4-1 over Thunderbirds) and TUT Ladies (4-2 against First Touch Academy).
The next round of games will be played on the weekend of 7 and 8 September at the University of the Western Cape.
