MEC’s condolences to slain pupil’s family
EASTERN Cape Education MEC Fundile Gade sent his condolences to the family of 16-year-old Owam Bam, who was stabbed to death at a school in Qumbu.
Department of Education spokesperson Mali Mtima said the pupil, who attended Shawbury Secondary School, died after he was stabbed in a classroom on Monday afternoon.
Mtima said Owam was taken to a local health centre where he was declared dead on arrival.
Mtima said a school safety support system had been activated to assist the school.
Gade noted that this was the second death of a pupil from the OR Tambo Inland District.
“A district team has been dispatched to the school and area to work with all stakeholders as part of a plan to help uproot crime, violence, faction fights and to stop the bringing of weapons to schools,” Gade said yesterday.
