Stage 2 load shedding as KZN braces for cold front

ETHEKWINI mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said the city’s disaster management teams had been placed on high alert as chilly temperatures were forecast for the rest of the week due to a cold front.

Eskom, which implemented stage 2 load shedding yesterday, said the cold front conditions coupled with faults to several generator units had placed the power system under severe pressure.

It said due to the severe constraints, stage 2 load shedding will be implemented today from 9am until 10pm.

“On Monday, six generators were returned to service at Medupi, Tutuka, Kendal, Majuba and Grootvlei power stations. The breakdown of four units overnight and early yesterday at Medupi, Duvha, Majuba and Lethabo power stations, as well as a delay in the expected return to service of a unit at Medupi had resulted in the power system being constrained.

“As the aged generation infrastructure is unreliable and volatile, this constrained power system is expected to persist for the rest of the week, particularly as the cold front hits,” Eskom said.

Kaunda said the city’s disaster management teams were well equipped and on standby to assist those who might be affected by the adverse weather conditions.

“During this cold front, we also urge residents to be vigilant and avoid using flammable materials to keep warm as this can cause fires, which can result in loss of lives,” he said.

Weather forecaster Wisani Maluleke said cooler temperatures were forecast for the province today, with moderate wind conditions.

He said rain was forecast for Friday in the north-eastern parts of the province, including eastern Zululand, uMkhanyakude and the northern King Cetshwayo region.

KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) spokesperson Senzo Mzila said disaster management teams were on alert across the province.

“Residents are urged to take precautions and stay warm. Those that use generators and braziers are urged to pay special attention whenever using such means to keep warm,” said Mzila.
