Chris Hani will never be forgotten

TWENTY-EIGHT years ago, Chris Hani was killed by Polish immigrant Janusz Walus, an event that almost triggered a civil war.

The truth after almost three decades remains elusive. The trail is getting cold as some of those involved have also passed away. Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We did not pass it to our children in the bloodstrea­m. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same.

Chris gave all of himself to the causes of freedom and justice, he also inspired generation­s that followed to try to live up to his example. Had he lived, South Africa would not be the monumental mess it is today. When Socrates died for his views and Christ (PBUH) for his faith, they believed that mankind would not get another example like that.

Freedom is a precious gift to be cherished, honoured, relished and respected. The rights that Chris Hani fought for were paid for with the sacrifices and the blood of our heroes who fought for our rights and died for our freedom. He loved his country so much that he risked his life and paid the ultimate price.

My tribute to him is to recognise those sacrifices that our brave men and women made to ensure that we can question our government, we have the choice to live the way we choose, that we have the opportunit­y for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Thank you Chris, for your sacrifices.

A man of your calibre passes through our blood-soaked Earth once in a lifetime. You live in the hearts of millions of our people. You are gone, and all over our troubled land there is a feeling of having been left desolate and forlorn. Beloved Son of Africa, you will never be forgotten.
