Two shot outside Pinetown post office

TWO people were shot and injured in an incident outside Pinetown Post Office yesterday morning.

It is alleged that the incident took place just after 11am in Crompton Street.

According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele, two people were standing near the post office when three suspects allegedly fired shots at them.

Gwala said both victims sustained gunshot wounds.

“They were taken to hospital for medical attention. Charges of attempted murder were opened at Pinetown SAPS for investigation,” said Mbele.

It is alleged that the suspects fled the scene towards the Pinetown train station. The incident resulted in post office operations being affected while emergency services were on the scene.

Meanwhile, a man has been left in a critical condition after the taxi he was in was shot at on Old Richmond Road in Mariannhill.

Mbele said it was alleged that a taxi with three people – the driver and two passengers – was travelling on Old Richmond Road when the vehicle’s way was blocked by another taxi.

Mbele said one of the men in the other taxi alighted and fired a shot at the driver in the first taxi.

The driver and the two other occupants were forced out of the taxi and the suspects fled in it, Mbele said.

The injured victim was airlifted to hospital, she added.

KZN VIP Medical Paramedics said when they arrived on the scene after 11am the driver was in a critical condition.

“He was stabilised on the scene by advanced life support paramedics before the Netcare 911 aeromedical helicopter was called in to airlift the man to hospital for the urgent treatment he required,” said paramedic Gareth Jamieson.

Charges of carjacking and attempted murder were opened for investigation at Mariannhill SAPS.
