Consider a holiday in the berg to beat blues

-

AFTER being confined at home for 18 months due to the Covid-19 lockdown, we took a break at the Drakensberg recently. Our destination was the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s Giant’s Castle camp.

It indeed was a pleasant stay. Just being among the snow-capped mountains was a refreshing experience. What marred our stay was travelling to our destination. We took the Nottingham Road route and the road was riddled with pot holes all the way from Rosetta, past Kamberg and up to the entrance gate of Giant’s Castle. This route does not bode well for the ailing tourism industry.

Fortunately, our return trip to Durban was via an alternative route – getting to the N3 via Estcourt – as advised by the helpful staff at Giant’s Castle.

The authorities have to improve these roads to make these rugged destinations reachable to tourists. There are many who may not be aware that Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has many attractive destinations covering the berg, bush and beach. South African senior citizens get a 20% discount on the going rates.

Some of these camps – such as Giant’s Castle in the Berg and Hilltop in Hluhluwe – include a breakfast in the tariff.

South Africans who have been locked down due to the Covid-19 virus should consider getting away to these rustic destinations.

During our stay, all Covid-19 protocols were strictly observed.
