Farming is definitely not for the youth

-

FUNDISWA Zanele Ndaba wants government to make farming “fashionable”, so that youth are attracted to it, thus creating jobs and maintaining food security (The Mercury, April 26).

This sounds like another pie-in-thesky idea from the Cyril Ramaphosa handbook of ludicrous State of the Nation Address promises. I am not a farmer but I know many farmers, and farming is not for the faint hearted. It involves lots of hard work and sacrifices, large financial risks, clever planning and years of skill and experience.

Most youth today want a cushy life given on a plate, so farming is definitely not for them.
