ENDANGERED
AFRICAN penguins at Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town. World Penguin Day is commemorated on April 25 to raise awareness about penguins. African penguins are the only penguin species found in Africa. In the past century, their numbers have declined dramatically and estimates suggest that there are only between 60 000 and 70 000 left. Scientists estimate that if the decline continues at the current rate, the charismatic and endemic birds will be extinct within 15 to 20 years.
