Scrap water bills from time of disaster

-

THE African Democratic Change (ADeC) has written to the mayor of eThekwini requesting the scrapping of water bills from the time of the storm disaster.

Scrapping of the water charges will allow those residential and commercial customers that receive water to share with those people who don’t have it.

It will also assist volunteers and NGOs to provide water to the most vulnerable communities.

They might have the resources to transport the water, but they don’t have the money to buy the water.

The municipality can renew billing once all water distribution has been restored in eThekwini.

In addition, ADeC’s proposal has the added benefit of redistributing water tankers to areas most in need.

Last, ADeC also requests the municipality provide a rates and electricity rebate to all eThekwini residents because during the storm there was no municipal services provided.

The municipality needs to quantify these losses and claim these amounts from the Disaster Management Fund. YUGEN MOODLEY | ADeC Durban
