Water crisis over Easter a disgrace

-

MINISTER Senzo Mchunu and mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, I write this letter to express my utmost disappointment and deep concern regarding the recent water crisis during the Easter long-weekend.

Despite our efforts to impress upon the eThekwini Water and Sanitation department management the significance of major faith-based activities and celebrations taking place, it is disheartening to witness their blatant disregard for these religious beliefs.

Regrettably, I must bring to your attention yet another tragedy directly attributed to the dire water situation: a resident of Trenance Park, Verulam, tragically lost his life while attempting to fetch water from a borehole.

While lifting a heavy water-laden drum, he suffered a heart attack and subsequently died.

This loss of life is entirely on the hands of the municipality and the government, and it is unforgivable! The actions or rather inactions of the authorities must be strongly condemned.

In addition to this tragic incident, I would like to remind you that we previously served a memorandum of demands to the mayor with a specified time frame.

Unfortunately, no response has been provided within the given seven days – a clear disregard for the concerns and needs of the community.

Despite sending a reminder, the mayor has consistently exhibited bias and a tendency to ignore the issues at hand. As a result, I have taken the liberty to report this conduct to the office of the public protector for their attention and investigation.

Furthermore, I want to bring to your attention that the deputy president will also be notified of these distressing events, and the failure of the authorities to address the water crisis adequately. It is vital that swift action is taken to rectify this situation and prevent any further loss of life.

I urge you to treat this matter with the urgency and seriousness it deserves.

The lives and well-being of the community are at stake, and we cannot afford any more negligence or apathy from the responsible authorities. Immediate intervention is required to ensure the provision of safe and sufficient water-supply during this critical time.

I eagerly await your prompt response, outlining the steps you will take to address this matter effectively.

It is crucial that the authorities restore the faith of the community and demonstrate their commitment to ensuring the welfare of all residents.
