Cyclist, 60, recovers after dawn stabbing

- Reporter Mercury

A DESPERATE call to cyclists who ride in the early mornings and late evenings to be extra vigilant has been made after a 60-year-old cyclist was stabbed yesterday morning.

The man was cycling in a group, but had fallen behind when he was attacked on the M4 Ruth First Highway near Riverside.

According to Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson, the man was attacked at around 5.15am.

“He tried to fight off his assailant but was stabbed in the upper body,” Jamieson said.

He said the man was stabilised at the scene before being taken to hospital in a private vehicle.

Jamieson warned all cyclists, especially those who cycle in the early mornings and late evenings, to be cautious and ride in packs.

“Take care on the roads as criminals prowl the streets looking to take advantage of people,” he said. |
