Brazil’s Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) has labelled as “false” the scandal surrounding the sale and export of tainted or ‘rotten’ meat following government action that saw 33 government officials fired and three abattoirs closed.

Meat industry stakeholders in Brazil have long claimed that the meat being sold was not ‘rotten’, but may have been past its sell-by date.

Although he did not present a shred of evidence to back up his denials, ABPA president Fransisco Turra said several analyses of Brazilian meat have shown that meat destined for export was not ‘rotten’, although he admitted that “some mistakes” were made by companies that did not follow “best practice”.
