No new threat from ND
Several reports have emerged of Newcastle Disease (ND) appearing as a new threat to the poultry industry. The reports allege that ND poses an even bigger threat to the poultry industry and other birds.
ND is a poultry disease that affects poultry. Chicken
producers globally vaccinate their chickens against the disease to prevent infections. Similarly, ND is effectively controlled in South Africa through vaccination and therefore poses no new threat to the industry.
Dr Charlotte Nkuna of SAPA says it is important to emphasise that there is no danger of consumers getting infected with ND from eating poultry products.
“We again wish to reiterate that there have been no reported human infections of the current H5N8 bird flu anywhere in the world as confirmed by the World Health Organisation and the International Organisation for Animal Health,” she says.¡
