Illegal dumping angers residents

Call fo keep area clean

VICTORIA Park residents are calling on Lukhanji Municipality to take action to curb the problem of illegal dumping on pavements and open spaces in the area.

When The Rep visited the area on Monday a pile of rubbish was found on the corner of Central Road and Glover Street.

A resident, who chose to remain anonymous, said the dumping was being done in front and around occupied houses but the owners had been unable to find the responsible persons.

“There is a problem of illegal dumping sites here and we do not see the municipality doing anything about it. Illegal dumping is wrong - whether it’s an open field or near a house. But dumping near another person’s house is just disrespectful.”

Yolanda Stellenberg, who also lives in the area, said it was a terrible situation as people were ignoring the by-laws.

“Thugs are going to hide behind this rubbish and mug people. Why is the municipality not cleaning up the rubbish?”

Residents also complained of sewage overflow problems in the area, claiming these problems were not being addressed.

Lukhanji municipality spokesman Fundile Feketshana had not responded at the time of going to press. The municipality has, however, on previous occasions, warned members of the public that action would be taken against offenders found to be illegally dumping refuse.
