Youths talk on life

- By Tembile Sgqolana

THE youth of ward 6 in Ezibeleni organised a debating competition last Saturday in order to educate the community about the issues affecting their daily lives.

One of the organisers, Zimkhitha Manqaphela, said the aim was to teach and develop the youth and old people of ward 6.

“The children were debating about the issues that affect them, like the social networks and if government meets their needs when it comes to education,” she said.

Manqaphela said they gave the participants time to do re- search on the topics.

“We also want them to teach their parents about these issues. We encouraged them to look at the right and wrong of the topics in order to inform their parents what is happening around them.”

She said there were bursaries and other loans pupils could get to go to universities, but people were not exposed to the information.

“We have a floating trophy which we will give the pupil who obtains the highest marks in this ward. This is part of our programme to motivate the youth. We want to show them they can not go anywhere without education.”

Manqaphela said they were also teaching young people about their history.

“We plan to hold these debates regularly and would like businesses to join us in the fight to change the future of young people in Ezibeleni,” she said.

Ward councillor Dumisani Njozela said the event was part of the ward youth action which tried to prevent the youth from doing bad things.

“They are motivating them about education and to know right and wrong. That is why the government is leading by education and trying to teach pupils not to be involved in drugs,” he said.
