For the Love of golf

Pumped up day sports a big field in Qtn

- By Derek Helm

THE Love Tyres sponsored golf day attracted one of the biggest fields seen at the Queenstown Golf Club in a long time on Saturday. With spectacular weather conditions and assistance from supportive water points, the 148 golfers were treated to on-course beverages and the course was in top notch condition and pretty, with sponsors’ bunting all around.

The day attracted many golfers from out of town as well as many women golfers who supported the cause. The golf had to be of the highest standard and eventually Wayne Bennett with 45 points was the golfer who played the best and was in the winner’s circle. Second spot was taken by Lizo Nika on 43 points with Rudi Barnard also on 43, in third place. Louwtjie van der Walt played good golf to take the fourth position.

The women’s division was also a tight affair and eventually it was Christie Miles who won the Love Tyres title ahead of Sanet Pieterse and Naledi Nika. The remaining places were taken by Marelize Bekker and Lizzie Atkins. There were some serious field prizes and the closest to the pin on the 8th hole was a bonanza for Felix Zwelibanzi who knocked his tee shot close and walked away with “Beer for a Year”. The closest to the pin prize on the fifth was taken by Keith Clark, while the women’s longest drive was hammered by Elaine Walker and the men’s by Nathan Clark.

The organisation of the golf day was precise and everything ran like clockwork. All the players were treated to lunch and a superb supper, while the clubhouse was transformed into a workshop of happy golfers. The entertainment went on for a long time and there were only complimentary comments from the players and supporters. Well done to Dylan and Debbie Love and staff for an exceptional golf day. The caddies were also smart in their white overalls which will become the uniform in the future.

Dates to diarise for the future are a three-ball alliance this Saturday competing for the Maynard Fuller Trophy. Get a covey together and names in the draw.

The following weekend will host the Queenstown Golf Club Closed championships to be played over 36 holes on Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31. This is limited to all handicapped golfers who are full members of the club. The name list is also at the club for entries in the prestigious tournament.
