Careers available in transport

- By Tembile Sgqolana

DEPUTY Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga told young people attending the Youth Transport expo at the Thobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre to make themselves the heroes of today.

Speaking at the expo on Monday, she said the expo was aimed at conveying information to young people about the opportunities available in the department.

“People see South Africa as the country that will develop Africa and it is up to young people to do this,” she said, adding that the next generation must remember the youth of 2015 and what it had done for the development of the country.

“If you are not doing it for South Africa please do it for Africa. Wake up, because Africa needs you. Young people must contribute to making South Africa better developed and Africa a united continent.”

Bantu education had not given older people the opportunities of today.

“We give you a list of careers so that you can have career guidance. This government pays your fees and the department of transport has many careers on offer,” she said.

“The poor person on earth is not one without money, but the one without a dream.”

She urged young people to stay away from alcohol and drugs. “You are destined to accomplish things, you have value.”

Queenstown district education department assistant director Madoda Ndembe said it was hoped the expo would continue to grow.

“The department is trying to guide children and show them the careers available from an early age,” he said.

Train driver Zukiswa Vanqa, who was trained through the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) said the department was doing a lot to assist poor people to achieve their dreams. “There are few women who drive trains, but that is changing and we will see more women driving trains.”

Lukhanji mayor Nozi Makanda said the municipality supported the programme. “This shows there are opportunities for pupils who do not do maths and science. We hope the youth council will educate more pupils in our area.”
