YOUNG designers and crafters from around the Chris Hani district showcased their talents during a programme organised by the Chris Hani Craft Hub and partners from Friday to Sunday in celebration of Youth Month.

Young designer and one of the adjudicators, Thabo Makhetha urged designers not to take short cuts in their attempts to build their brands.

“I was a semi finalist in Miss SA in 2012 and on one of the trips I was told by one of the judges that I did not dress like a designer and I should just do it as a hobby. All the negative things people said about my dream have been a motivating force all these years,” said the 27-year-old businesswoman.

Makhetha said people needed to know their weaknesses and plan around them. “Do not be afraid to make mistakes and no matter how hard the road is, you will still learn something.” The sport, recreation, arts and culture department, Seda, Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), Queens Casino and Hotel and Chris Hani District Municipality were sponsors.

Craft hub manager Ayanda Gili said it was the second year of the event which aimed to see designers and crafters showcasing their work. “Winners will get a workshop on marketing from ECDC because some of them do not know how to market businesses. We would love to open a shop where the clothes of designers could be sold.”
