Kit for twelve schools

- By Zolile Menzelwa

IN AN attempt to develop sport in rural and disadvantaged schools, the sport, recreation, arts and culture department (DSRAC) in the district handed over chess and volleyball equipment to 12 schools from the Chris Hani district at the departmental offices on Wednesday.

DSRAC district manager for sport and recreation Thoko Oliphant said the department wanted to promote the Wednesday leagues where schools played against one another with schools to expand their focus from just soccer and netball.

Cofimvaba sport coordinator Onke Ncobo said pupils were ready to play, but the people who were supposed to guide them did not measure up to the task.

The department needed to have accredited people to coach sporting codes in schools.

“This (the donation) is going to help promote interest in sport so that children can move away from teenage pregnancies and drugs,” he said.

Present were schools from Cofimvaba and Lady Frere, with the rest of the schools to collect their equipment on Wednesday.
