Sport boost at Unathi Mkefa

- By Abongile Solundwana

UNATHI Mkefa Primary School pupils will soon be playing sport – on the school’s own sports facilities.

The development was made possible by funding of R298 000 from the National Lotteries Commission.

Principal Phumzile Mlilo said she had heard the call for funding applications during a live lotto draw. The next day, the school staff members filled in the form and sent it off.

The allocation would mean a lot for the school, she said.

“It brings me joy to know that the community will have ownership of a school that they can be proud of.”

She said sport and recreation was an important part of the life of a pupil.

“Playing sport can boost their confidence and serve as motivation to remain in school.”

She said sport also distracted young people from destructive behaviour like drugs and alcohol abuse.

“Getting busy on the field will also prove therapeutic for most children who come from disruptive, broken homes.

“My spirits are high because I am close to retiring and it is important for me to leave a legacy. Education is my passion and it is gratifying to settle down with the knowledge that I made something tangible happen.”

The construction project will be overseen by a steering committee consisting of the school governing body and community members. The facilities will accommodate rugby, soccer and cricket with a netball court on the side.
