The Rep

70 at the Classic

THE 10th edition of the Komani Classic was played over the weekend with a field of 70 players taking part over the two-day competition. The golf course is in top notch shape and the efforts of Dougie Rheeders and his staff were roundly applauded.

Visiting golfers came from Maclear, Cradock and East London. The sponsors, including BK Savings Bank and some smaller sponsors, ensured that every player enjoyed all the sideshows that went with the premier fundraising golf day.

The weekend got off to a good start with a betterball format on Saturday. The early leader was Team Barber with the “Silver Assassin”, Cliff Barber, leading from the front. Close on their heels came Team Uhlig and Team Vanda a few points adrift. The Sunday individual Stableford format sorted the field out and the team of Basil Buss, Stefan Cloete, Cor Oosthuizen and Don Schnehage coasted to a narrow four point victory with 227 points. Following closely behind four points off the pace was the team of Siya Mndingi, C Booysen and Spamla Soldaat and Moses Shasha with the team of Dru Nass, Gay Wormald, Hugh Wormald and Mark Schonken just one point adrift in third. Solid in fourth spot were Greg Brody, Corneel Meyer, Colin Hartley and Morne Roodt on 220 points.

The generous field prizes were on offer on both days and the closest to the pin hampers for Saturday were won by Siya Mdingi 5th, Colin Hartley 8th, Thami Pandle 11th and Gary Goldschmidt 16th. Sunday prizes were won by Justin Wood 5th, Carlos Mashinya 8th, Job Gobizembe 11th and Marelize Bekker 16th. The closest to the pin on the 18th was won by Ana Taggart on Saturday and by Tiaan Smuts on Sunday when he drove the 18th green with a monster drive. With the support of sponsors, the Queenstown Golf Club managed to host a great weekend. Well done to chief convenor Cor Oosthuizen, tournament director Ian Thomas and the committee and thanks to the kitchen and bar staff. This weekend is the last round of the Old Mutual Grand Prix medal so the champion will be known by Saturday. All “brainboxes” must be at the club for the last episode of “U think u Rock” tonight.
