-

FIVE prisoners who escaped from holding cells in Glen Grey during December are back behind bars.

Police spokesman lieutenant Namhla Mdleleni said the five – Mpho Bhokisi, 19, Athenkosi Ncinane, 22, Vuyolwethu Fisani, 24, Bongile Jaxa, 30 and Bongani Kanzi, 30 - escaped from custody on December 18. Four other prisoners who also escaped are still at large.

The five were rearrested after a task team, established immediately after the escapes, found them in the Glen Grey area on December 20.

They have been returned to custody and after a brief appearance in the Lady Frere Magistrate’s Court on December 21, they will appear again on January 11.

Mdleleni said additional charges of escaping from lawful custody have been added to the existing charges of the prisoners.

“The search for the four other prisoners continues and police urge community members not to try and apprehend the prisoners as they are considered dangerous.”

Any information on the whereabouts of those still not rearrested can be shared by contacting the nearest police station or by contacting the Glen Grey SAPS on (047) 878-0050.
