Care centre the target of vandals

PHUMELELA Special Care Centre manager Nobuntu Gulwa has urged the community of Ezibeleni to help the staff of the centre to look after the building following an alleged attempted burglary late December last year.

Gulwa, speaking to The Rep at the centre yesterday morning, said staff checking on the building in December found that 12 of the windows had been broken with burglar proofing tampered with in an apparent attempt to gain access to the building.

The intruders had jumped over the fence, trampled the area while taking vegetables from the garden and tampering with an electric box outside the building.

“They were obviously trying to steal the computers from the offices as most of the broken windows were in offices. They also took out all the bulbs from the search lights outside. We reported the matter to the police but they did not open a case but instead told us to report the matter to the public works department,” Gulwa said.

She said an alarm system had since been installed.

“This school belongs to the community, the children are children of community members. We plead with the community to help us look after it. They must own it because it is their school,” she said.

The centre has been making desks and schools interested in buying them can contact Gulwa on 076-335-6988.
