Tips on how to survive the heat

-

BABY, it’s hot out there!

The Rep readers reported soaring temperatures during this week while residents of Queenstown and surrounding areas sweltered and sweated their way through the first full week of 2016.

Temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius were reported in Queenstown, worsening heat conditions, as a heat wave swept through South Africa. Some motorists reported that control displays showed that the temperature had climbed up to 51 degrees Celsius in parked cars.

According to weather reports, the worst of the heat wave is past, with cooler days on the way.

Here are a few tips to remember in the meantime:

Stay hydrated. Make sure you drink lots of water. Dehydration can be extremely dangerous.

Stay out of the sun. Even though some people are still on holiday and want to enjoy the last few days, rather do so in the shade.

Wear sunblock. Sunburn can be sore and lead to skin cancer.

Wear a hat or carry an umbrella to protect your head from the sun.

Do not ever leave children or pets in parked cars. The heat rises at an alarming rate and this may lead to death.

Lastly, even though you’re hot, don’t forget to wear your sunglasses and at least look cool! - Rep reporter
