The Rep

Mayor on the mend

- By Zolile Menzelwa

LUKHANJI executive mayor Nozi Makanda has made substantial progress in recovering from injuries sustained during a head-on collision in November last year.

Makanda is said to be responding well to treatment at home after she was involved in the accident in which one person died.

The Rep reported (“Lukhanji mayor hurt in crash,” November 6 2015) that Makanda was involved in a head-on collision near Cathcart. She had been returning from a South African Local Government Association provincial conference at the Fish River Sun near Port Alfred. She was admitted to St Dominic’s Hospital in East London in a critical condition.

In a subsequent report (“Good wishes across the political divide,” November 13 2015) political par- ties serving in Lukhanji council wished Makanda a speedy recovery. Cope, PAC, UDM and the DA wished her family strength during that period.

In another report (“Lukhanji mayor discharged from hospital,” December 4 2015) it was indicated that Makanda had been discharged after almost three weeks in hospital.

This week, following a media query by The Rep and questions from readers posted on the newspaper’s Facebook page, spokesman Feketshane said Makanda was responding well to treatment.

“(She) has made substantial progress and we shall announce the date of her return to the office. We wish to also make it clear that she is healthy and ready to serve the people of Lukhanji. We wish to thank everyone for the support provided during the difficult times.”
