CHDM to develop housing

-

THE Chris Hani District Municipality has been given developer status for emergency housing but needed to be informed by local municipalities on beneficiaries.

CHDM spokesman Thobeka Mqamelo, responding to queries by The Rep following a report (“Residents plead for RDP houses” January 8), which detailed the plight of 39 families waiting for RDP homes after their Sada houses were destroyed by heavy rains in 2010, said disaster management was the responsibility of the district authority.

The residents have been living in temporary

shelters for the past five years.

Mqamelo said while the district authority had been given developer status for emergency houses for local municipalities by the human settlements department, CHDM had to be informed by local municipalities which needed to provide information on the beneficiaries for emergency housing.

“We are yet to receive information from Lukhanji with regard to the Emadakeni area in particular.”

The Rep referred the matter back to Lukhanji Municipality for comment and is awaiting feedback. – Rep reporter
