Komani repairs water leakages

- By Bhongo Jacob

WATER recently leaked from a water pipe on the premises of Komani Hospital for four days at a time after the Chris Hani District Municipality has initiated water restrictions in the Lukhanji area.

The Rep was told by a source, who declined to be identified, last week that water had been leaking from a pipe inside the premises. A visit by The Rep to the site showed water spurting from a pipe laid in a gutter.

The source also claimed that water was leaking from the basins in the bathrooms but that no ac- tion had been taken. Access to the bathrooms could not be gained to verify the claim.

Department of Health spokesman Siyanda Manana said ageing infrastructure was the cause of the leaks.

He said the matter was dealt with as soon as it was reported.

“We fixed the pipe immediately, an hour after it was reported to us,” he said, adding that the company contracted to correct water problems at the hospital had already started working on preventing further leaks.

Manana said there was, however, no wa- ter leaking in the bathrooms.

“We do not have that problem. Employees should report such matters to the hospital management before running to the media,” he said.

Chris Hani municipal spokesman Thobeka Mqamelo said all sectors of society should heed the call to save water.

“Our technical team is in touch with the hospital authorities and the department of public works in a bid to resolve the issue. This matter is receiving our urgent attention,” she said.
