BROKEN ROBOTS MAKE MOTORISTS SEE RED
TRAFFIC lights in Komani have raised the ire of residents, with those at a Robinson Road intersection out of commission for about three years.
Resident Zukisani Mgudlwa described the faulty traffic lights en route to Mlungisi as a difficult challenge for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
“The municipality should give basic services. One would expect them to know how a town should be run. It seems as if no one cares, maybe because they do not drive on this side of town.”
He said the dysfunctional traffic lights were hazardous. “It is worse on busy days. Old people from rural areas come to get pensions and grants but struggle to cross because of the heavy traffic.”
A Komani resident for 31 years, Sarah-Lee Peridis, said the condition of roads and maintenance of robots had deteriorated over the years.
The situation made her nervous as vehicles did not always stop. “Many roads are in a very poor condition which is damaging our vehicles and causing accidents and frustration.”
The roads near Queendustria were also poor, with proper maintenance urgently needed.
Sive Mhlaba, who uses a bicycle to get to work daily, said he avoids using Robinson Road.
“Sometimes it is better to use another route. We fear for our safety because there are reckless drivers who can cause an accident at any time.”
He appealed to the authority to fix the traffic lights.
Komani residents took to The Rep's Facebook page to vent their frustration, with one user saying, “Local authorities have ignored a serious safety issue for three years, and seem incapable of addressing it. Society deserves a regime that functions effectively, and they have failed dismally.”
Questions were sent to Enoch Mgijima communications officer Fundile Feketshane two weeks ago, but he had not replied at the time of going to print.
