Defeat for Breakers

- MAXWELL LEVINE

IT WAS not the ideal start for local side Breakers in the Eastern Cape Super 12 Championship as they were thrashed 36-0 by Park in Port Elizabeth.

The Mlungisi outfit had no answers for the dominant Park.

Park led 21-0 at the break after tries by flanker Kenneth Kolesky, Marius Wesraadt and Bathandwa Mrwetyana. Flyhalf Handre Snetler converted all three.

Three further tries in the second half by Kolesky, Kirwin Delport and Morne van As added insult to injury to an already deflated Breakers side.

Ill-discipline did not help matters as Thabo Sokwebe was red-carded for a high tackle and lock Aphelele Maho was also sent to the cooler for alleged punching. So it is back to the drawing board this weekend when the Komani team clash with Buffs at the Mlungisi Stadium.

In other results, Star of Hope shocked defending champions Gardens 22-12 at Jabavu Stadium in Uitenhage. Swallows got the better of Harlequins, beating them 22-16 in their own backyard. Kruisfontein was too strong for Berlin Tigers, winning 39-10. Ntlaza Lions opened their account with a well-deserved 15-0 win over Buffs in East London. Despatch beat last year’s finalist, EL Police, 20-15.

Besides Breakers playing at home against Buffs, Ntlaza can make it two out of two with a win against Star of Hope. Police can redeem themselves with a home win over Harlequins.

Kruisfontein travel to Mdantsane for a match-up against Swallows. Park and Gardens have byes. Matches start at 3.30pm.
