Compliments on the greens at busy golf weekend

- SEAN HEIDEMANN

IT WAS a really busy weekend at the golf club with the final round of league golf taking place in conjunction with the regular Saturday competition, and it was wonderful seeing so many out-of-town players enjoying our course.

Another positive was the compliments received on the condition of our greens and how true they were rolling in the trying conditions. Congratulations to greenskeeper Douggie Rheeders.

The league team did well to end second overall to Gonubie. Congratulations to all involved, and a special thanks to Garry Brown, who was the convener/captain of the team.

The individual Stableford competition was won by the superfit Derek Helm on 44 points, followed by Jean Bartlett on 39, winning the count out from Danie Nel and Leon Joubert. There were five two-clubs – Colin Hartley on the 6th, Leon Joubert on the 8th and Matt Cotterrell on the 11th and 16th.

The junior golfers played in East London last Sunday at the West Bank golf course. Gabriel de Jongh played solid golf to take 8th place in the A division, Josh de Jongh was 5th in the B division and Cole van Schoor did well to come 6th in the B division. Well done to all of them.

This Saturday is the first round of the Windhoek pairs competition, a betterball Stableford. The entry fee is R80 and the winners go through to a regional competition. The winners of that go through to the next round in Windhoek, all expenses paid, and those winners go through to the world finals in Portugal.

It’s well worth entering! The competition is only open to Queenstown Golf Club members and you need to be at least 18 years old to enter. Maximum handicap for men is 28 and women 32, and unfortunately no senior tees may be used. The next big event is the GHS golf day on Saturday February 3. Please get entries in the draw for what promises to be a cracking event.

Just a reminder of protocol – golfers are required to enter their names on the draw sheet when playing the Wednesday and Saturday competitions. There is no way of checking entries and knowing who is still on the course if names are not entered. Players are asked to make an effort to do this in future.
