MPENDULO Public Primary School hosted its interhouse athletics competition last Friday to choose their team to compete at the United School Sports Association of South Africa (USSASA) circuit trials.

Mpendulo athletics coordinator Wezo Ndiki said a date had not been chosen yet for the trials, but it was expected to take place at the end of the month.

Ndiki said there were several good athletes and the school last year boasted a pupil who won gold at the provincial trials and silver at the nationals.

“Our goal this year is to reach the provincial trials. Anything further than that would be beyond our expectations.”

Deputy principal Linda Melamane said, “From the way in which the athletics coach trains pupils, it is clear he knows what he is doing. He follows up on former pupils who are still passionate about athletics and continues to train them. He really does care about the pupils.”

Pupil Aphilile Nqolota, who reached the provincial trials for the 500m in the U13 category, said she was focusing on making it to the nationals.

“I started training this year for my event. I love athletics because it gives us things that we do not have, like bags, T-shirts and money that we win in competitions. I hope this year I will qualify to go to Limpopo and the national competitions and I aim to come back with a gold medal.”
